This law captures the spirit of healthy
living. Your body is your best coach. Listen to it. Be present.
Pay attention to how you feel. Learn to understand when your body
is telling you to rest. Listen to when it is telling you that you
are full. We have learned too well to discipline ourselves to do
without. We have been taught that thinner is better, that weight
counts, and that there is no gain physically without pain. These
are myths. We live lifestyles that are slowly killing us. All of
the major killers are “lifestyle” diseases. They are
the result of our own poor choices in terms of what we eat, drink,
and how active we choose to be.
The average American who makes it to age 65 will live 17.9 more
years. The quality of those years depends on what he does to take
care of himself in his 40s and 50s.
Slow down. Learn the basic rules of good health (the 7 Natural
Laws) and follow them. Begin with 3 core behaviors: (1) get active
for at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week; (2) drink an 8 oz
glass of water for every hour you are awake; and (3) eat a balanced
diet (equal parts lean protein, raw fats, and unprocessed carbohydrates).
As you become healthier you will be more sensitive to the wisdom
of your body. You will want to eat healthy food. You won’t
have to discipline yourself to work-out. You will miss it when
you can’t.
Keep a log. Catch yourself doing the right things. Don’t
expect to be perfect. Start by identifying a few bad habits you
want to give up. Exchange them for good habits. As long as you
are making progress, allow yourself some “treat”. Be
conscious about your life. Reward yourself for following your plan
and forgive and forget your missteps. |
